Essentials for the New Mum

As a new mother, it can be overwhelming to navigate the world of parenting and figure out what products and resources you need to care for your little one. That’s why I have put together a comprehensive guide to help you identify the must have items and services that will make your life easier as you embark on this exciting journey.

  1. Nursing Pillow

A nursing pillow is an essential item for any mum. It helps to support the baby and make nursing more comfortable for both mum and baby. Look for a nursing pillow that is soft, machine-washable, and has a removable cover for easy cleaning. The Niimo Pregnancy Pillow for Sleeping is an award winning nursing pillow, great for;

  • RESTFUL SLEEP: This comfortable pregnancy support pillow eases you into a restful sleep and allows you to rest comfortably in a lateral position. The maternity pillow offers back and hip support
  • MULTIPURPOSE: Wrap your baby in a soft embrace and keep your hands free during nursing. The wooden button allows you to transform this pregnancy sleeping pillow into a breastfeeding pillow and play support
  • FIRMNESS: The pregnancy sleeping pillow has a 100% siliconized polyester fibre filling with just the right level of firmness to suit your and your baby’s versatile needs
  • MATERIALS: The breastfeeding pillow cover is made from 100% high-quality cotton, that feels soft on the skin. It features a hidden zip for extra security that won’t catch on clothing
  1. Baby Carrier/Sling

A baby carrier is a must have for any new mum if you want to keep your hands free while keeping baby close. Look for a carrier that is comfortable for both you and baby, and that can be worn in different positions. A carrier with adjustable straps and a supportive waistband is ideal. It is also important that baby is positioned correctly with knees above the hips and this is the perfect option, ergobaby slings are well known, last a long time, and parents love them;

‘This is absolutely amazing, I wish I had it for my previous baby! It’s so comfy to wear and easy to put on – I clip the waist, flip it over my head, put the baby in, then do the side clips and adjust as needed. Baby is so comfy in it and has lovely naps. I didn’t expect to love the carrier so much, but I use it more than my pram now. Definitely would recommend’ ~ Amazon Review

  1. Nappy Bag

A good nappy bag is essential for any new mum on the go. Look for a bag with plenty of pockets and compartments for storing all of baby’s essentials, such as nappies, wipes, and bottles. A bag with a changing pad included is also a plus. The Ruvalino bag is a popular choice, with it always being a backpack which you can carry or attach to your pram. It is one I have seen regularly in our parent and baby classes and it seems to be a hit that will last you throughout babyhood and into childhood.

  1. Baby Monitor

A baby monitor can give you, as a new mum (and Dad) peace of mind when baby is sleeping in another room. Look for a monitor that has a clear audio and video feed, and that can be accessed via a smartphone app for added convenience. The Babysense Video Baby Monitor, 4.3 Inch Split Screen with Two Cameras and Audio, Remote Pan & Tilt, 300m Range (Open Space), Adjustable Night Light, Two-Way Audio, Zoom, Night Vision, Lullabies;

  • Watch your baby from anywhere in the house, as the baby monitor features Ultra-Long range of up to 960 feet in open space. When you go too far you’ll get notified by the out-of-range warning.
  • The cutting-edge Auto Infrared Night Vision is here to let you see what’s going on with your baby at any hour of the night. On top of that, you can get alerts about high or low room temperature or use the 2x digital zoom with Remote Pan (360 degrees) & Tilt (90 degrees).

6.Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding can be challenging as new mum, so any support is always appreciated. Consider buying (or add to a gift list) yourself a book on breastfeeding, The Mindful Breastfeeding Book is the first of its kind, linking the workings of the mind to having a more fulfilling breastfeeding experience. Pregnancy is a time for preparation and learning, only few expectant couples look beyond the birth itself. Learning about how the breastfeeding body works and how your brain is an important part of this, can make all the difference when it comes to those early days and weeks of parenthood and having the breastfeeding experience you desire. This friendly, simple and interactive guide is written by Anna Le Grange, a Certified Lactation Consultant, Paediatric Nurse and Meditation Coach with over 20 years experience in supporting new parents. From first-hand experience, Anna has seen the difference that understanding the Mind-Body connection makes for families who are starting out on their breastfeeding journey. In this book she shares the practical tools that she uses with families alongside breastfeeding education and support in her practice. However you want breastfeeding to look for you and your family, this book will provide you with the knowledge, mindfulness tools and support that you need to navigate your way as you plan and start to feed your baby. Giving you the confidence to both parent and feed with calmness, connection and in a way that works for you. I met Anna in London at a conference and her talk was amazing, I highly recommend you follow her and this is a very unique book.

7. Support of Family & Friends

Postnatal care is crucial as you recover from childbirth and adjust to life with a new baby. While healthcare professionals provide medical support, family and friends can play an essential role in providing emotional and practical support during this period. The first few weeks after childbirth can be overwhelming, so having a support system in place can make a significant difference for your mental and physical wellbeing. Whether it’s helping with household chores, preparing meals, or providing a listening ear, family and friends can offer invaluable assistance. By prioritising postnatal care and enlisting the help of loved ones, You can focus on your recovery and bonding with baby. One of my favourite books to recommend (and I recommend reading this during pregnancy) is Why Postnatal Recovery Matters as this will put things into perspective on how important your recovery is and how amazing this support will be for your physical and emotional wellbeing. I have this book in my local parent and baby classes and absolutely love it, I believe EVERYONE should be reading this book!

8. Parent & Baby Classes

Parent and baby classes offer numerous benefits for both parents and their little ones. These classes provide an opportunity for you to bond with you baby while also connecting with other new parents in a supportive and social environment. For babies, these classes can aid in their development by exposing them to new experiences and stimuli, such as massage, yoga, and as they get older; sensory play. These classes also offer a chance for babies to socialise and interact with other infants, which can be beneficial for their social skills and emotional development. For you, as parents, parent and baby classes can provide valuable information on topics such as infant development, sleep, and feeding, while also offering a sense of community and support. By participating in these classes, you can feel more confident in your abilities as a caregiver, which can lead to a more positive and fulfilling parenting experience. Locally, in Dumfries, I run postnatal classes such as Baby Massage & Parent Wellbeing and Postntal & Baby Yoga. If you are not local, then go and find your local groups as they are a must for new parents, not only will you find them beneficial for your baby but also for your own mental health and wellbeing, and it is commonplace that when you create friendships in these groups they then last a life time.

Take care of yourself, so that your cup is overflowing and you pour from the saucer leaving enough in the cup for you, your physical and emotional wellbeing and always having enough to gift to others, especially your new baby. ~Rachel
